Nick is a lifelong resident of Rockland County. Born and raised in Nanuet, he attended St. Anthony’s School, where he marched in the St. Patrick’s Day parade every year from kindergarten through 8th grade. He attended St. Joseph’s Regional High School, where he was a 3 sport Varsity Athlete. He went on to attend Sacred Heart University, where he was a Division 1 Athlete and Student Government Vice President.
Immediately following graduation from college, he began his twenty-year career in law enforcement and attended the New York City Police Academy where he graduated with honors in the top 10th percentile of his class. He was then assigned to patrol in the 19th and 25th Precincts. He subsequently joined the Orangetown Police Department, where he currently serves in the rank of Sergeant. His current assignments include Orangetown Patrol Supervisor, Chief Drill Instructor at the Rockland County Police Academy, DCJS Master Instructor, and Team Leader of the Orangetown Disorder Control/Patrol Response Team. Previous assignments include the Special Enforcement Unit, the Community Enrichment Team, Rockland County Police Academy Senior Drill Instructor, Rockland County Intelligence Center and the Rockland County Mobile Field Force. He is a 2-time recipient of the Thomas Kennedy Memorial Award for Bravery at substantial personal risk, a recipient of the Frank Ballard Memorial Award for Life Saving at personal risk, and a recipient of a Certificate of Special Congressional Recognition. Other awards include medals for Distinguished Police Duty, Meritorious Police Duty, Excellent Police Duty, Live Saving, Investigative medal, and Unit Citation award. Nick also served in the Orangetown PBA on the Board of Directors, the Bargaining and Grievance Committee, and the Executive Board, including a 3 year stint as President. He currently serves in the Rockland County PBA as a legal and veterans affairs consultant
In addition to his police career, Nick also serves as a Major in the United States Marine Corps Reserve. He was commissioned as a 2nd Lieutenant through the USMC Officer Candidates School Program. He attended the United States Army Armor Basic Officer Leader Course, where he earned the Military Occupation Specialty of Tank Officer and graduated with honors on the Commandant’s List. He has served as a Tank Platoon Commander, Tank Company Executive Officer, and Tank Company Commander. He has since transitioned to the Civil Affairs Field, where he has served as a Civil Affairs Assistant Team Leader and Team Leader. Major Whalen currently serves as a Civil-Military Operations Planner with 3d Civil Affairs Group in Great Lakes, Illinois. He has served in operations and exercises, including combat and contingency operations, in locations including Iraq, Kuwait, the Republic of Korea, the Philippines, and Thailand. His most recent deployment was in 2022 as a Civil Affairs Officer assigned to Operation Allies Welcome, where he was responsible for assisting with the resettlement of Afghan Allies following the War in Afghanistan. His personal decorations include the Joint Service Commendation Medal, the Navy and Marine Corps Commendation Medal, the Joint Service Achievement Medal, and the Navy and Marine Corps Achievement medal, as well as numerous campaign, service, and unit awards.
Nick is a member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars, the American Legion, the Marine Corps Association, and the Rockland County Shields. He currently resides in Bardonia with his 2 dogs, Gunner and Dewey.
