- October 25 2025 Major Degree
The Ancient Order of Hibernians is built on the principles of Friendship, Unity, and Christian Charity. Every member begins that journey when they take the Shamrock Degree at their Division, but the journey is not complete until they have received the Major Degree of the Order.
When you were first initiated into the AOH, you pledged to one day take the the “lessons and tests of our Order”, that is the major degree. Many Brothers put it off, sometimes out of worry that “the test” means a formal exam. The Major Degree is not a classroom quiz, there are no written questions, the “tests” are solemn lessons, delivered through ceremony, that deepen your understanding of what it means to be a Hibernian. The Major Degree is more than a ceremony. It is the moment when you:
- Fully unite with your Brothers across the country, sharing in the same sacred obligations and traditions.
- Deepen your understanding of what it truly means to be a Hibernian.
- Qualify for leadership, as the Major Degree is required to hold higher office in the AOH.
- Honor our heritage, by embracing the lessons of our history, faith, and mission.
The New York County Board will host a Major Degree Ceremony on Saturday, October 25, 2025, at 11:00 AM. This year’s exemplification will be held at the historic Old St. Patrick’s Cathedral, where our Hibernian forebears once stood together to defend the church against a nativist mob intent on burning it. Taking your Major Degree at this sacred site offers you the chance to join their legacy, complete your journey as a Hibernian, and stand shoulder to shoulder with your Brothers.
The Rockland County Board will pay for your attendance, and, if we get sufficient participation, provide transportation. Do not put this off. Every Brother should be a Major Degree Hibernian.
Let us show our commitment to Friendship, Unity, and Christian Charity by taking this important step together.
