Parade Dedication 2026
In this 250th anniversary year of American independence, we dedicate this parade to the Irish men and women who helped forge this republic — and whose role in that founding was too long obscured.
The Irish were here at America’s beginning. Three signers of the Declaration of Independence were born in Ireland; four others were the descendants of Irish immigrants. The Declaration was attested to by the Continental Secretary, a native of Derry. Its first printing was by an immigrant from Tyrone, and it was first read in public by the son of a Wexford immigrant.
Rockland has a personal connection to the Revolution. On the night of July 15, 1779, Richard Butler, born in Dublin, Ireland, commanded the elite light infantry that stormed the British fortification at Stony Point, less than twenty miles from where we march today. It was one of the most daring American victories of the Revolution, won in part by an Irishman, on Rockland’s own ground.
Yet the Irish contribution to America’s independence was systematically airbrushed from the American story, as the Irish became targets of nativist hostility in the decades that followed. Their record was buried, and is too often still overlooked.
To the Irish patriots of the American Revolution, and to all who followed them in service to their country — we march today in joy and pride, and in the firm resolve that their story, too long overlooked, shall not be forgotten.
